2 killed in Jordanian price protest

MA'AN, Jordan Two demonstrators died of bullet wounds hereWednesday as violent protests against government price increaseserupted in several areas of southern Jordan for the secondconsecutive day, area residents said.

Several protesters were wounded by gunfire in this city, 130miles south of Amman, where at least 17 people were injured in adisturbance Tuesday.

In the face of one of the worst outbreaks of social unrest everseen in Jordan, Crown Prince Hassan appealed for calm and toldreporters he had flown to Ma'an by helicopter Tuesday to hear thegrievances of the demonstrators.

ALBANY -- Companies responsible for cleaning up hazardous-waste sites gave at least $446,000 to lawmakers' campaigns -- and 80 percent of it went to Republicans who tend to favor business-friendly reform of the state's waste clean-up program, citizen groups said Thursday.

``It appears polluters are paying to get a cheaper clean-up policy,'' said Anne Rabe of Citizens' Environmental Coalition.

NTSB to Announce Cause of Comair Crash

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The National Transportation Safety Board said Tuesday it expects to rule in July on a probable cause of the crash of a Comair flight that killed 49 people.

In a statement, the board announced tentative plans for a public meeting on July 26 in Washington, and is expected to include the NTSB's safety recommendations and findings concerning the cause of the Aug. 27 crash.
