VIC:Endangered plants emerging from ashes
Endangered plant species are reaping benefits from one of Australia's worst ever natural
disasters.
While the Black Saturday fires killed 173 people and destroyed thousands of properties
and businesses, the flames have been a boost to the nationally endangered Eastern Spider
Orchid.
The plant is normally detected in low numbers at only a few sites around Victoria.
Scientist MIKE DUNCAN from the Arthur Rylah Institute has found the rare native has
responded to the 2009 fires by flowering 10 times its normal rate at Wilsons Promontory
National Park.

Vic: Electric car given green light on Australian roads
We're one step closer to seeing an electric car on Australian roads .. with the federal
government giving a design by Mitsubishi the green light .. as far as safety standards
go.
But there's no word about when it'll be coming to local caryards.
Designed and produced in Japan .. the plug-in electric car can be driven for 160 kilometres
at speeds of up to 130 kilometres an hour when fully charged.
Transport Minister ANTHONY ALBANESE says it's a win for the challenges of climate change.
He's admitted there's no infrastructure for electric drivers to recharge at service
stations as yet .. but says the car could be plugged into domestic household supplies.
And Mr ALBANESE says given that 85 per cent of Australians drive less than 100 kilometres
a day .. it would suit most lifestyles.
Mitsubishi will enter large-scale production in June for the Japanese market.

Vic: Safety screens, pre-payment deal ends taxi blockade
MELBOURNE, April 30 AAP - Safety screens and prepaid fares at night are to be introduced
in Melbourne taxis under an agreement reached between the Victorian government and protesting
taxi drivers today.
Victorian Transport Minister Lynne Kosky said the measures were intended to ease tensions
that can arise between drivers and passengers, particularly early in the morning.
The changes were agreed to at a meeting between the minister and representatives of
Melbourne taxi drivers who had staged a sometimes angry blockade in one of the city's
busiest intersections since last night.
The protest followed the near-fatal stabbing of a taxi driver by a passenger in inner
suburban Clifton Hill yesterday morning.
Ms Kosky said mandatory pre-paid fares for trips between 10pm and 5am (AEST) would
be introduced within the next couple of months as part of existing licensing agreements.
She said passengers would pay a set fare at the start of a trip, with the meter still running.
The passenger or driver would then pay the difference as shown on the meter at the
end of the trip.
"The drivers have agreed that they will provide an amount for the fare and then at
the end of the journey you can actually see whether that's the exact fare, if it's lower
they'll actually provide that refund," she said.
"But it does mean that people aren't doing a runner from cabs when they should appropriately
be paying for fares.
"I think the introduction of the safety screens and the pre-payment for evening fares
will actually ease some of the areas where the tension does arise and then escalates."
Ms Kosky said many of the drivers were unaware the government had been trialling safety
screens and they were already in production.
"We aim to have those screens rolled out within the next 12 months but (I'm) hoping
to have them rolled out prior to Christmas," she said.
Each screen will cost between $1,000 and $1,500 and they will be fitted in up to 4,000 taxis.
Drivers will have the choice to have them fitted in their vehicles.
The Victorian government will share the cost of the screens with taxi operators, Ms Kosky said.
Ms Kosky said she had agreed to meet with the drivers' representatives again within
the next two weeks to further thrash out some of the issues.

NSW: Police to be firm but fair this NYE in Sydney
SYDNEY, Dec 28 AAP - Anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated during Sydney's New
Year's Eve celebrations, say police, but they expect the night to pass largely without
incident.
More than one million people are expected to make their way to the Sydney Harbour foreshore
this year for the traditional fireworks displays.
Assistant Police Commissioner Catherine Burn told reporters "substantial numbers" of
police would patrol the city, the harbour and other metropolitan areas throughout New
Year's Eve and the following morning.
She said officers had been given instructions to be "fair but firm".
"My intent is that we have a safe and secure New Year's Eve celebration, and to do
that I've instructed my officers to take a firm but fair approach to ensure that people
do celebrate, do have a good night," she said.
"However, we will have a heavy police presence and we will be monitoring any unlawful
behaviour or any criminal activity."
Despite the warnings, Ms Burn said she expected the night to pass largely without incident,
as it had done in previous years.
"Last New Year's Eve was a very safe and secure New Year's Eve celebration, and I'm
expecting the same this year."
NSW Transport Minister John Watkins called on revellers to take public transport into
the city to help ease traffic congestion, heightened by a number of road closures.
"On a busy night like New Year's Eve, with potentially one million people on the harbour
foreshore, it's so much easier to leave the car at home," Mr Watkins said.
"Catching public transport means you don't have to worry about parking, traffic jams
or who is going to drive home.
"And with extra [public transport] services running late into the night and early morning,
public transport is the best choice."
Mr Watkins also urged party-goers to plan ahead before leaving home.
"The key messages are to plan ahead ... look after your family and friends, be aware
of the weather, take some extra water ... and have a great night out," he said.

Fed: Andren says his pancreatic cancer is inoperable
CANBERRA, Aug 20 AAP - Federal independent MP Peter Andren says doctors have told him
his pancreatic cancer is inoperable.
Mr Andren earlier this month announced he was abandoning a run for the Senate after
learning he had cancer.
In a column published in newspapers in his central NSW electorate of Calare, the politician
said he is determined to recover.
"My pancreatic cancer isn't operable and I will be getting various treatments over
the next weeks and months," Mr Andren said.
"I am also planning to visit the Ian Gawler Clinic in Melbourne, where a very supportive
complementary program is in place to establish an immune system boosting diet, along with
meditation.
"I feel very determined to beat this and the energy and prayers of so many people will
give me the strength to do it."
The 60-year-old said he plans to return to Canberra for the second week of federal
parliamentary sittings next month to put on the record his gratitude for those who made
possible his 11 years as an MP.
"I also want to outline a few ideas on where this country is at and where I believe
it should be headed.
"I am sorry not to be able to contest the Senate, but I have a more important campaign ahead."
A former television journalist, Mr Andren had decided to run for an upper house seat
at this year's federal election after a redistribution of his seat of Calare.

Vic: Ships cut drinking water use while in Melbourne
AAP General News (Australia)
04-04-2007
Vic: Ships cut drinking water use while in Melbourne
MELBOURNE, April 4 AAP - Ships visiting Melbourne have slashed their use of fresh water
by 28 million litres so far to do their bit for the environment.
The Port of Melbourne Corporation (PoMC) has introduced voluntary measures for saving
drinkable water in all ships that visit the Port of Melbourne.
The measures, in line with water restrictions introduced in Melbourne on January 1
this year, encourage ships to limit their use of potable water to a maximum of 25,000
litres during their visit.
Potable water is used mostly for drinking, bathing and food preparation, but some ships
use it for industrial and health and safety purposes, such as washing deck areas.
PoMC chief executive Stephen Bradford said in the first three months of this year,
ships had saved 28 million litres of potable water.
It is a 75 per cent reduction on water use on the same time last year and equivalent
to the combined annual water usage of almost 150 Melbourne households.
"PoMC supports the state government's commitment to water conservation and we have
carefully considered how we can best contribute to responsible water usage," Mr Bradford
said.
"Water is essential for shipping services, particularly when there can be many days
sailing between ports, but the community also expects industry to play its part in water
conservation."
Ships are encouraged to reduce water consumption through water audits, identification
of water conservation opportunities and changes to current practices including minor capital
works.
Some vessels, such as cruise ships, have been granted exemptions to the 25,000 litre
limit after providing written justification for the extra drinking water.
Melbourne moved on to stage 3a water restrictions on April 1.
The measures reduce weekly residential garden watering times, but allow for businesses,
including commercial car washes and nurseries, to continue operating.

NSW: Technology extending working hours: survey
AAP General News (Australia)

NSW: Technology extending working hours: survey
SYDNEY, Dec 4 AAP - Technological advance in the workplace was supposed to free up
workers and provide more flexibility to their lives.
But according to a survey conducted by job website CareerOne.com.au, computers, mobile
phones and email have become a millstone around most employee's necks, breaking down the
traditional barrier between work and home life.
The survey of 1,021 people found that 72 per cent of respondents were working longer
hours than five years ago, with 66 per cent saying they worked more than 40 hours a week.
Technology was seen by respondents as the major culprit for the change.
Email had increased the work load, 56 per cent of those surveyed said, while 72 per
cent admitted checking work related emails on weekends or holidays.
The simple phone had also impacted on people's personal lives, with 79 per cent saying
they regularly took work calls outside of business hours.
Baby boomers were the worst offenders, with 90 per cent admitting to checking emails,
taking calls or thinking about work outside of the office.
CareerOne.com.au editor Kate Southam said technology was easing work out of the office,
and into people's personal lives.
"People are not saying `I'm leaving the office, it's the end of the business day',"
Ms Southam said.
"They're saying `I'll pop in the earpiece and have a few phone calls on the way home,
I'll respond to a couple of emails at home. People have no way of having a nice neat line
in the sand between work and their non-work life."
Ms Southam said the survey highlighted the need for employees to achieve a better work-life
balance.
Productivity and the health of employees would be affected unless they switched off, she said.
"Employers have a role to play here by discouraging after hours communication and definitely
putting a stop to unpaid weekend work," she said.
"A well-balanced person is better for everyone."
Employees also needed to extricate themselves from the mobile office, she said.
"You need to do whatever you need to do to get over your obsession, if you want to
have personal relationships, and you want to have your health, if you want to be a person
that has other interests," she said.
In another survey released today by communications company Citrix Online, 74 per cent
of the 468 full-time workers questioned said they had to go to the office on their days
off or holidays, while 69 per cent said they were expected to be accessible during personal
time.
But unlike the CareerOne.com.au survey, Citrix Online said the problem could be solved
by improving the technological assistance needed to work from home.
"(Employers) are expecting their employees to be available over breaks like Christmas,
and yet failing to equip them to do these jobs remotely ... leading to widespread employee
discontent," the company said.

NSW: Protesters march to mark Tampa anniversary
SYDNEY, Aug 25 AAP - Up to 1,000 people are expected to march through central Sydney
tomorrow in a rally to mark the anniversary of the so-called Tampa affair.
The protesters will assemble at Sydney's Town Hall and continue down George Street
to pressure the federal government to alter its policy on mandatory detention.
Refugee Action Coalition of NSW spokesman Ian Rintoul said the Tampa Day rally would
highlight the legacy left by the government's detention of more than 430 asylum seekers
who were rescued by the Norwegian freighter Tampa on August 26, 2001.
"Tomorrow marks the day the Tampa went to the rescue of boat people who were on their
way to Australia to seek protection," Mr Rintoul said today.
The Tampa went to the aid of the asylum seekers on a sinking 20m wooden Indonesian fishing boat.
The rescue sparked a international row when Captain Arne Rinnan would not return them
to Indonesia, Indonesia refused to have them, and Australia did not let them land on Christmas
Island.
It ended up anchored for a week off Christmas Island, part of Australia's migration
zone but in international waters, off Australia's north-west coast.
The incident spawned the government's Pacific Solution policy. The asylum seekers were
picked up by the navy and taken to impromptu detention centres on Manus Island in Papua
New Guinea and Nauru.
New Zealand took many of the refugees.
"Thirty-two people are still held on Nauru four years after the Tampa began the Pacific
solution," Mr Rintoul said.
The refugee action group would continue to push for an end to mandatory detention and
a review of the government's deportation arrangements, he said.
"We want a review of the deportation arrangements in place, particularly in light of
what's happened to Vivian (Alvarez) and others who have been deported back to danger,"
he said.
A delegation from the Refugee Action Coalition of NSW assembled today at Prime Minister
John Howard's Sydney office to present a letter detailing the group's concerns about the
government's refugee policy.
The letter includes concerns about the treatment of West African refugee and former
detainee Cheikh Kone.
Mr Kone, who was detained at a detention centre in Port Hedland in Western Australia
in 2000, has received a bill from the Department of Immigration to pay $89,000 relating
to the costs of his three-year detention.

Various more coherent codes associated with religion, astrology, and alchemy in the medieval and early modern period, were known to at least some sections of the community. The traditional Catholic liturgical colours were: white for the feasts of Christ, Mary, and saints that are not martyrs; red for martyrs; violet in penitential seasons; black on Good Friday and at funerals; green at all other times (the system was modified in the 1960s). Catholics also associate blue with the Virgin Mary.
A powerful modern code is the red/amber/green of traffic controls, according to which red = ‘danger/stop’, and green = ‘safety/go ahead’.

AN EXECUTIVE TO COUNT ON: CFO'S DUTIES INCLUDE NOT ONLY BOOKKEEPING BUT FINANCING.
For Steven Peskaitis, the handwriting was on the wall: No CFO, no IPO.
Mr. Peskaitis, president and CEO of Chicago Map Corp., knew a chief financial officer was a must for the Downers Grove company's upcoming initial public offering. But getting someone on board was going to be difficult. Chicago Map, which does several million dollars annually in sales, could not offer the salary CFOs command at larger corporations.
However, the firm did have one thing going for it: huge potential, which was about to be unleashed. Mr. Peskaitis used a combination of stock options, competitive salary and benefits three months ago to lure John McLane, a veteran CFO who took early retirement from a large electronics company. The attraction: the challenge of growing a small company into a major player.
``It's hard to match larger companies, but what we were offering was to be part of something that you could not be part of at a larger company. Sometimes people get to a point that it's not just about salary,'' Mr. Peskaitis says.
A CFO improves professional management and lays down the law about running a fiscally sound operation. Not every small company needs one; a firm growing at a steady but unspectacular pace can make do with a controller or bookkeeper. But a firm that's about to boom or is looking to professional investors or public markets ought to consider adding this position.
A CFO does more than crunch numbers. Duties include raising capital and presenting a company to the investment community. Inside the company, a CFO can play ``bad cop'' to the CEO's ``good cop.'' The founding entrepreneur may whip up excitement, while the CFO provides assurance to investors that the company is on solid financial ground.
CFOs not only keep control over finances, but they also guide the company head in making financial decisions. In a small business, that could mean the CFO acts as a buffer between family and friends, who frequently are start-up investors or help run the business.
There's no magic formula that says exactly when a CFO is needed, but Randall Tavierne, industry leader for the entrepreneurial services manufacturing practice and a partner at the Chicago office of Ernst & Young LLP, says strategy is the deciding factor.
``It goes to the company's vision of growth and where they see themselves in five years. If they are really looking to expand the business, go to the equity market, go to debt markets, or go international -- that's when they need to start thinking about a CFO,'' Mr. Tavierne says.
``He's got to invite big money in, and the stature of the man who does it is important,'' says Maurice Nagle, a counselor with the U.S. Small Business Administration's Service Corps of Retired Executives in Chicago.
Mr. Nagle suggests hiring someone who knows the industry and has extensive contacts among bankers and investors.
$10-million mark
Loop-based U.S. RealTel Inc., which subleases rooftops (for antennas) to telecommunications companies, began generating revenues this year. So far, 1999 sales total less than $5 million, but CEO Perry Ruda expects that to double by yearend.
U.S. RealTel hired John Glass as CFO in March, after it went public last year but before revenue really started coming in. ``Had we not done it, it would have been a gross error. If we were to say to the investment community that we are growing this huge company without a dedicated person as our CFO to watch the finances, we would not get very far,'' Mr. Ruda says.
Though sales volume should not solely determine whether to hire a CFO, Mr. Tavierne says companies generating more than $10 million in annual revenues ought to think about it.
For KnowledgeCircles.com Inc., a Schaumburg-based company that organizes Web-based knowledge forums, the question was not whether to hire a CFO, but when.
The company opened in January and is eyeing an initial public offering in two to three years. Heeding colleagues' advice, founders Melissa Giovagnoli and Michael Kuhlman decided that the best way to position themselves to go public was to have a CFO on board from day one.
Two months into the company's life, the founders contracted with a New York-based banking veteran to handle CFO duties. Terms include a small percentage of the company, with the possibility to increase it based on performance. They are now looking for corporate sponsorships, angel investors and venture capital through their finance chief's contacts.
``The Internet is moving fast, and therefore, you want to do things right from the get-go. Part of raising capital is having a solid management team. That's what investors are looking at: It's not so much the ideas, but the management team,'' Mr. Kuhlman says.
Aside from experience and certification in accounting, a good CFO needs qualities that don't show up on a resume.
Because CFOs usually are responsible for interviews with potential investors and roadshows to sell the company, excellent written and oral communication skills are essential. A good command of technology and how it's used to run a business is also crucial, particularly with the growing popularity of e-commerce and the Internet.
CFOs not cheap
CFOs need to fit with the company, but they shouldn't have to win a popularity contest. Since many gut-wrenching decisions are driven by the bottom line, CFOs need to have the gumption to make them, even when they might include tough calls -- layoffs, restructuring or divesting product lines.
Of course, a good finance guru doesn't come cheap. California-based staffing and workplace consulting firm Robert Half International Inc. estimates that companies with less than $50 million in annual sales pay their CFOs $67,750 to $92,000 this year, up 3.1% from 1998 rates.
Those figures may sound discouraging to a small business, but innovative compensation packages and an emphasis on a startup's potential can put a CFO within reach.
``There is a way to get a CFO. There are a lot of great people out there who are looking. You can negotiate today in a way you never could before,'' Ms. Giovagnoli says.

GlobalSign SSL & EV SSL Certificates Not Susceptible to Latest SSL Vulnerabilities.
GlobalSign SSL customers already safe from "Leading Null Character attack" and "MD2 vulnerability" presented at recent Black Hat Conference
Portsmouth, NH (PRWEB) August 6, 2009 -- GlobalSign today reassured customers using GlobalSign SSL and EV SSL Certificates that GlobalSign SSL is already protected against the newly outlined threats to SSL detailed at the recent Black Hat Conference in Las Vegas - referred to as the Leading Null Character attack and the MD2 vulnerability.
The Leading Null Character attack, as highlighted by security researcher Moxie Marlinspike, allows attackers to trick browsers into believing an issued Certificate may be used on a domain to which it has not actually been issued. This attack could theoretically be used in phishing and masquerading attacks. GlobalSign Certificates do not allow the /0 character to be used in applications, and consequently GlobalSign SSL Certificates are not susceptible to this type of attack.
Dan Kaminsky, director of penetration testing for IOActive, presented that Certificates using the Message Digest Algorithm 2 (MD2) may be subject to pre-image attacks later this year. GlobalSign Certificates have never used the MD2 algorithm and have been using the SHA-1 algorithm for many years, an algorithm designed by the National Security Agency (NSA) and universally accepted by industry and Government as secure. This is one of the longest uses of SHA-1 by any major Certificate Authority. So again, GlobalSign SSL is not susceptible to this vulnerability.
"GlobalSign has been issuing Certificates to provide the strongest SSL security since 1996, and we were one of the first Certificate Authorities to have the foresight to create and distribute a 2048 bit Root Certificate, " says Steve Waite, Marketing Director with GlobalSign, "the fact that we already protect against these new vulnerabilities, as well as provide further assurances against future attacks with 2048 bit Root Certificates and free SGC security re-enforces our 12 year-plus commitment to providing the strongest SSL security for our customers."
For more information on GlobalSign SSL please visit www.globalsign.com/ssl/
About GlobalSign Established in 1996 and as a WebTrust accredited public certificate authority, GlobalSign offers publicly trusted SSL, including EV SSL Certificates, S/MIME and Code Signing Certificates for use on all platforms including mobile devices. Its partnership with Adobe to provide Certified Document Services (CDS) enables secure digitally signed PDF e-documents. These core Digital Certificate solutions allow its thousands of customers to conduct secure online transactions and data transfer, distribute tamper-proof code, and bind identities to client certificates for email security and remote two factor authentication. New in blue It takes more than shiny face paint to earn a place in the Blue Man Group.(Suburban Living)
Byline: Pam DeFiglio Daily Herald Staff Writer
People are crowding into the lobby of the Briar Street Theatre, with only a half-hour to go until show time.
The three stars are hanging out here, too, enjoying the fact they can stroll around freely. Nobody recognizes them, because they're not blue.
It's almost time to go to makeup, when Tom Galassi, Chris Browne and newcomer Gareth Hinsley will don bald caps and slather the finely calibrated color Blue Man Blue on their heads and hands.
But for now, they're happy to speculate on why the show, which opened at Briar Street in Chicago in fall 1997 as a performance-art oddity, has been such a long-running hit. Far from getting creaky, the piece has been freshened over the years with new scenes. And this month, Hinsley, an actor from Leicester, England, steps in as a new Blue Man.
Seeing a London performance of Blue Man Group blew him away, he says, leading him on a half-year quest to turn himself into a Blue Man - one of a trio of wordless actors with a penchant for percussion who take the stage to offer observations and commentary on the art world and society. That might not seem like a surefire bet to make a show a funny, popular success, but it has worked for Blue Man Group.
"Back in London, you see a lot of really bad theater," Hinsley explains. "But I thought this came from a very true place."
The blue inside
Hinsley had three years of drama school and performances in serious works like "Angels in America" under his belt when he first saw the blue guys do their thing.
"I was in awe of the whole thing, of how real it was," he says. "There was a feeling anything could happen."
He went to an open audition for a new Blue Man in London six months ago. The main qualifications: A talent for drumming, an average height and "eye sparkle" - the ability to express emotions with the eyes.
Hinsley was promising, but not quite ready. The Blue Man Group music director sent him to drumming school for three months - without a contract. When the show's directors thought he could drum well enough, they moved on to other training. Seven weeks ago, he came to Chicago.
Because Blue Man Group frequently switches performers among its Chicago, New York, Boston, Las Vegas, Berlin, Toronto, Amsterdam and London productions, there's a chance Hinsley could end up in one of those places - or in the Orlando show that will be opening soon at Universal Studios. But for now, he's a Chicago guy.
Tom Galassi, who has been performing in the show since 1997, mentors Hinsley in the ways of being blue.
"Gareth came to us with the basic knowledge. We're just helping him find his character," says Galassi, a native of Springfield, Ill.
Character?
The three actors stress Blue Men don't simply play a role, as actors would in a play.
Instead, they say the characters are outsiders, discovering the Blue Man world anew with every performance.
"You're just kind of raw and heightened personally. You're looking at everything like a child," says Galassi. "That's the exhausting part."
Hinsley, the new guy, has to go within to find his character, says Galassi. And Hinsley says that process of letting go can be difficult.
"The character's so open," he marvels.
Even the shiny makeup is calculated to telegraph the Blue Men's expressions.
"It looks cool, but there's a reason for it," Galassi explains. "With that color, whatever you're feeling translates right out to the audience.
And of course the makeup also makes a philosophical statement.
"We put on the mask, and talk about ripping our own cultural masks off," Galassi points out.
The new and old
In addition to the new guy, the Blue Man Group has added some scenes. One explores the history of animation, while another looks at the weirdness of sitting in an Internet cafe and, while ignoring the people around you, conversing electronically with strangers. Both of them bear the Blue Man hallmarks of sharp social observation and satire, punched up with Blue Man theatrics.
The show still contains classic time-tested bits, such as the Cap'n Crunch cereal crunching, the tossing of marshmallows into a Blue Man's mouth, the drumming with multi-colored paint, the eating of Twinkies with an audience member and the passing of reams of crepe paper through the audience. Which all explains why audience members in the first several rows are offered raincoats.
All of the acts share the Blue Man aesthetic. You can take them as comments on consumer culture and the snobbery of the art world. Or, because they come off as clever and funny, you can just laugh.
"I think the show's funny, but there's more to it," says Hinsley.
"It's an experience. I don't feel comfortable labeling it.
Galassi tries his own take.
"We're having a tribal experience," he says, then adds, in a wink-wink tone, "with a paying audience."
Which brings up a good point. When an outsider, underground show gets so big that it expands to nine cities and charges 60 bucks a ticket, does it also become a target worthy of skewering?
Starving artists looking for a big breakout, take note.

Internet banking is a popular work in virtual progress.(Brief Article)
Sep 08, 2004 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX)
Australian banks could improve internet banking services to the lucrative small business sector. There is an increasing number of small and medium-sized businesses using online banking. The sector has high rates of loans and deposits. However, banks are not offering products that suit small business. In April 2004, ING Direct launched a new internet banking product for the sector, which has been taken up by over 4,000 customers. St George Bank also offers a specialised online banking product for business.

Retailers hope Christmas sales last into 2004.
Dec 28, 2003 (The Wall Street Journal Online - ABIX via COMTEX)
US retailers are forecasting only modest growth of 2.2% in sales for the Christmas 2003 season. Tracy Mullin, CEO of the National Retail Federation, said retailers will depend on end-of-December sales to boost 2003 revenues. Negative influences on sales have included an influenza near-epidemic and a high terrorism security alert. Market researcher NPD Group believes personal computer sales improved by 15% compared with 2002, short of consensus forecasts of a 19% improvement. Internet shopping rose sharply. Luxury goods, jewellery, toys and electronic goods are expected to report good sales figures, but discount stores fared less well, while apparel sales were mixed at best. NPD said that lean inventories also inhibited sales, improving margins through lack of mark-downs, but also failing to excite consumer interest.
